This attraction is number one on the list of things to do in Liverpool for Trip Advisor. One of the most enjoyable experiences of a visit to this magnificent building for young and old alike, our attraction tickets never fail to astound and impress any visitor from all parts of the world. The single, massive Vestey Tower, named after its benefactors, the Vestey family, replaced the original twin-tower concept for the cathedral after going through several design alterations. This main roof section is 101m (331ft) above ground floor level and over 150m (500ft) above sea level and offers the most stunning panoramic views across the city as it spreads like a giant jigsaw of buildings, roads, parks and other landmarks.
Open to the public most days, it is accessible by 2 consecutive lifts followed by 108 stairs. Please note, there is no wheelchair access up to the Tower due to lift size but we do have a live television screen at the bottom of the Tower which is accessible and still gives you great views across the city!
The Great Space Film & Audio Tour
Begin by entering our newly built film theatre for a 10 minute panoramic film shot in High Definition (HD) on a screen that fills your field of vision. Immerse yourself in the story of its building then feel the exhilaration and wonder of ‘flying through its glorious high spaces’. The film contains ‘never seen before’ archive material of fascination to local historians and visitors alike, and beautifully shot aerial footage of Liverpool. This is a great taster both of the city and to the Cathedral itself.
Your host will then give you all the simple instructions you need to use your headphones and audio set to go on the tour. The tour is available in both adult and child format so that families can enjoy and appreciate this wonderful place in their own way. Far from being a continuous stream of words, the tour has music and anecdote, pointers and pauses – all designed to enhance your experience of the Cathedral by bringing to life its architecture, history and art, its people and purpose. Please note, last film viewing is 4:30pm and last is 4:00pm. If you are unable to do these two tours on the day of purchase, simply keep hold of your receipt and come back the following day and you can do it then!
Twilight Tower (Only available in February-October on Thursday evenings)
Each spring, we open the tower on Thursday evenings for our spectacular Twilight Tower experience. Through the summer, the Tower can be open as late as 10:30pm, allowing visitors to take in a spectacular view of the city and beyond as the sun sets and the lights go on. Bell Ringing Simulator & Twilight Tower Tour
New for 2016, we have our new Bell Ringing Simulator which gives everyone the chance to have a go at ringing smaller versions of our bells in the ringing chamber! This is perfect for anyone of any age to get a taste of what it’s like to be a bell ringer. Whether you’re a beginner or a professional bell ringer already, our new simulator allows you to have a different experience than ever before! After you have had a go on the simulator you then walk up the top of the Tower (a total of 217 steps) to see the beautiful sunset across the city. This tour is only open on selected Thursday evenings so please check in advance before arriving; we don’t want to let you down!
