The construction of Liverpool Cathedral was completed in 1978; the event was celebrated with a service of thanksgiving and dedication attended by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The mighty building was designed by 22 year old Giles Gilbert Scott who won a competition to design the Cathedral. In February 1903 the Cathedral Committee purchased St James's Mount from the Corporation of Liverpool, and decisions of building materials became serious. The choice of sandstone from the major local quarry in Woolton was to have immense consequences for the locality.
This new book tells you in depth information about the money, the men and the transportation behind the sandstone to how it got to create this beautiful building.
